Working mothers are 1.5 times more likely to experience burnout than others, according to McKinsey & Company. While this may not come as a surprise, it certainly calls for urgent attention.

Balancing a career and family life often feels like walking a tightrope, with exhaustion and emotional depletion looming as constant threats. The impact is profound, extending beyond their careers to their physical and mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.

But why are working mothers particularly susceptible to burnout? The causes are multifaceted—structural barriers at work, insufficient flexibility, an unequal division of household responsibilities, and societal pressures all play a role.

Caught in a relentless cycle of guilt and inadequacy, many working mothers feel they’re failing in one area or another, no matter how hard they try.

The good news? Burnout is preventable. While external support from organizations is crucial, working mothers can also take proactive steps to protect their well-being. Building a strong support system of family and friends, setting realistic expectations, and practicing self-compassion are key strategies. Recognizing that it’s okay to ask for help and that no one can do it all is a powerful step toward relief.

Empowering women with tools for stress management, time management, and effective communication is equally important. At the same time, society must challenge traditional gender roles and foster more equitable sharing of household and childcare responsibilities.

The conversation around ‘mommy burnout’ is about more than just individual experiences—it’s about creating workplaces and cultures that genuinely value and support all employees, regardless of gender or family roles.

Working mothers make invaluable contributions to their families, workplaces, and the economy. The real question is: Are we ready to invest in their well-being and reimagine our workplaces to be more inclusive and supportive for everyone? The future of our workforce depends on how we answer.
